Dictionaries
Even in the age of the spellchecker, a good dictionary is still essential to anyone working with words.
<p>Dictionary.com is a good, and more importantly, free option. It uses its own core dictionary and, among others, the Random House Unabridged Dictionary (Webster's I think), the American Heritage Dictionary, the Online Etymology Dictionary, Princeton's WordNet lexical database and even links to Encyclopædia Britannica (subscription needed) -- most of which are American, so be warned. It's no substitute for 20 low-tech tomes, but if you're sitting at your PC anyway, it's about the best of them. There are also thesaurus and encyclopaedia tabs on the site.
It also offers browser plug-ins, translation services and iGoogle add-ons.
TIP: You can add a function to your website where double-clicking a word will open a new window containing its definition -- a la The New York Times.
